SOMEONE LIKE THEM on Whizbuzz

I tried something new on the P.R. front with my latest novel, Someone Like Them.  I advertised my book on a platform called Whizzbuzz Books.  I heard about it from a fellow writer giving a talk at a seminar.  I looked it up, I liked what I saw and purchased an ad. It wasn't expensive, and my book cover  and the Amazon link to the book will stay on Whizbuzz for a year.  Not a bad deal, particularly since the Someone Like Them  cover and the purchase link will be posted on the following Whizzbuzz platforms:

           Facebook

            Pinterest

            Linked In

            Flipboard

            Tumblr

            Wordpress

            Goodreads

            and the Whizzbuzz BUZZ page

In addition tweets about Someone Like Them will appear on seven different Twitter accounts, according to Whizbuzz the ad should reach more than 600,000 pairs of  eyes.  That remains to be seen, but I do know that marketing is everything when you have a product, no matter how good it is, and I think Someone Like Them is good.  A couple of reviewers on Amazon agree with me, giving the book five star ratings.  I'm glad that they enjoyed the read, and it's my hope that anyone who reads this blog will purchase the book and enjoy it too.

PRE-ORDER PLEASURE

I want to thank anyone who might be reading this blog and pre-ordered my latest release, Someone Like Them.  It was the first time I used the feature on Amazon.com, and it went well.  Someone Like Them has received at least one five star review on the site, and I’m grateful to anyone who takes the time and goes on-line to write a review.  It always feels good to know that readers enjoy your work.

“I really enjoyed the Carson family. They endured tragic, mental and physical abuse, and they still prevail. I hope you continue to write about this family. Myra’s story "

Right now I’m caught up in doing research for the latest novel I’m writing, a historical fiction.  It will be the first time that I’ve tried to tackle this genre and the going is slow, but I’m enjoying the process and learning a lot.  I hope to release another novel in the Sin series later this year or early next year.  Stillwaters is the title.  It will be a re-release of one of my most popular novels, so stay tuned.

SOMEONE LIKE THEM IS HERE!

Finally! Someone Like Them has been released.  I've been talking about it for so long it's hard for me to believe, but the novel is out.  Right now it can be purchaed at Amazon.com, in paperback and Ebook formats.  However, many of my other novels can be purchased at HALF PRICE during SMASHWORD'S annual SUMMER SALE.  The sale will end the last day of July.

Someone Like You is the last book in the Stillwaters series.  I had fun writing about the different roads that each of the Carson sisters took on the road to happiness.  I have two more romantic suspense novels that I hope to release. Hopefully, that should happen in the coming year.  In addition, I've taken a stab at writing a historical fiction novel which I've been working on this year.  We'll see where that goes, but historical fiction is an area of writing in which I've grown increasingly interested.  I have ideas for at least two more novels in that genre. Meanwhile, Someone Like Them is ready and waiting to be read.  Just CLICK  ON THE BOOK COVER and you can read an excerpt and then purchase a copy.

SOMEONE LIKE THEM COMING JUNE 30th!

All right, I know I said that this book would be released in May, but so many good things happened that had to addressed that the month's delay became necessary. Finally, a release date for SOMEONE LIKE THEM has been written in stone.  Superstar, Wanda Carson, will step on to the public stage and do her thing on Wednesday, June 30th.   SOMEONE LIKE THEM ,  the third and last book in the Stillwaters  series, can be pre-ordered as an ebook on Amazon.com.  The book will also be published as a paperback.  In case you haven't read my previous post about the story line, it is as follows:

Lady C is a superstar!  The Grammy winning diva is

the toast of Broadway, and will soon grace the silver

screen.  She is on her way to becoming an

entertainment legend, but in the real world she is

WANDA CARSON, single, mother of three, and the

legal guardian of her two grandchildren by her

wayward daughter.  Having been poverty-stricken

most of her life, Wanda has overcome many

obstacles.  Yet, wealth and fame doesn’t mean that

she has it all.  Not only is she estranged from her

daughter, whose whereabouts is unknown, Wanda’s

life is threatened by a dangerous man.

Plagued by fears and filled with insecurities, Wanda

goes into hiding, where the last thing she expected

was to meet a man.  A victim of abuse in past

relationships, DONALD CHAPMAN turns out to a

with him changes her perspective in life.  Yet, just as

unexpectedly another man enters the picture with a

plan that could disrupt Wanda’s entire world.

A NEW COURSE OR THE SAME OLD DIRECTION

I love to write and at times I admit that I overdo it.  Right now I'm doing the 5th edit of my romantic suspense/women's lit novel, SOMEONE LIKE THEM, which I've been writing about all year and have yet to deliver (but it's coming).  I'm doing edits on one of my old romantic suspense novels, SMALL SENSATIONS, for re-release in the future.  I'm working on completing the edits on a thriller co-written with my writing partner, L. Barnette Evans, from the Grandmothers, Incorporated cozy mystery series.  I'm turning one of my plays into a general fiction novel, which is easier than I thought it would be.  I'm busy entering my latest full-length play, Ebony Eagles, in playwriting contests and I recently received word that it is a finalist in one of the competitions.  On top of this I've also committed myself to writing a brand new play for one organization and working with a theatre to set up a reading of another play. Those two things happen if I win monies from two different arts organizations.  Yeah, I'm overextending myself, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

The other day I received information about an on-line book app that specializes in hooking readers up with romance novels.  Of course I had to look into it.  I liked with I saw and now I'm considering re-releasing some of my former novels, SIN, SWEET SACRIFICE and SINFUL INTENTIONS, among others, on that app--with rewrites and updates of course.  At times it seems that although I'm setting a brand new course for myself as a writer in some areas, I'm still steeped in the same old direction in others.  Oh, well!  That's my life, and I LOVE IT!

FINDING MY WRITING STRIDE

My last blog stated how I was on my fourth edit of my next novel,  Someone Like Them.  Well, scratch that, I am now on my fifth edit and counting.  I've agonized on why this book is taking me so long to get right.  Why have I not been satisfied by the main character in this book.  The personalities for the protagonists in my other novels came so easily.  Eventually, it came to me.  The protagonists in Someone Like Them started out weak, and I cannot write about weak women, mainly because I don't know any.  I was raised by strong, competent, independent women who taught me to be a strong, competent, independent woman, and that's what I write about.  In Someone Like Them I was trying to create a character I really didn't know.  Thank goodness I've finally discovered who she is, and no matter how long it takes, Wanda Carson is going to shed her light brightly in Someone Like Them.

Meanwhile, for those writers of color who might be looking for a writing community to join, I would like to suggest  Crime Writers of Color (CWOC).  Most of its members write crime and mystery novels, which I write with the co-author of our Grandmothers, Incorporated cozy mystery novels.   However, I do believe that there are some writers who are members of the group who don't write mysteries.  Nevertheless, I think it is a group worth exploring.   I stumbled on CWOC by accident a few months ago.  I find the members to be very supportive of each other and the information they share is very helpful.  I've attended a few panels and workshops that the group has held via Zoom and I've been very pleased with the results.  It cost nothing to join the group.  Simply put Crime Writers of Color in the Google search engine.  The name should come up and you can read about them.   If you're interested, follow the directions regarding how you can become a member.

 Until next time...

COVID and BLACK LIVES MATTER CREATIVITY

Okay, so I'm still working on Someone Like Them.  I'm on my fourth edrt and going strong, because the critique on my first edit wasn't very good, and I'm waiting for the critique on my third edit.  This covid crisis has been good for me insofar as I've given myself more time to do just about everything, which improves the quality of what I do, from writing books to writing plays.  I'm proud of that, and it's a lesson I should have learned sooner.  But, better later than never.

The Black Lives Matters movement  has turned out to be quite an advantage for Americans in general, but for black creativity specifically.  I've never seen so many pubishers looking for African American material, or so many producers looking for African American content.  I'm thinking about acquiring a literary agent for Someone Like Them and for another one of my novels I hope to re-release.  I figure that I ought to strike while the iron is hot.  Who knows how long this interest in black writers will last.  If we go by historical trends in this country this interest in all things black coud be over by the end of the year.

That's all for now.  Stay Safe!

FROM THE PAGE TO THE STAGE

As stated in this blog last month, I am a playwright as well as an author, and one of the plays, Grandmothers, Incorporated, which I co-wrote with fellow author and playwright, Lillie Barnett Evans, enjoyed a production by
The Theatre Arts Club of Detroit on March 15th and 16th. The Theatre Arts Club (TAC) is a Michigan non-profit organization established in 1910 as an all women's theatre group.  The TAC produces two shows a season.  We were happy that Grandmothers, Incorporated was one of them.

In the Two Act play, the  four amateur sleuths, who call themselves Grandmothers, Incorporated go to an isolated cabin in the woods for a  weekend of peace and quiet and, unexpectedly, encounter a notorious drug dealer hiding in the cabin.  The result is less than peaceful or quiet, but it is hilarious.

The play, which is also the title of the popular cozy mystery novels of the same title, made its debut Off Broadway in 2010 at the Billie Holiday Theatre, and enjoyed a successful run just as it did in Detroit.  Below are  some of the photos from the Detroit production.

THREE MONTHS of MARCH MADNESS!

These last few months have been moving like a freight train.  I am an award winning writer who doesn't like to be put in a box, so I write romantic suspense novels, cozy mystery novels, plays (both comedy and drama) and anything else I feel like writing, and I'm blessed to have been successful at it.  Oh, I don't mean famous successful, but able to make money successful, and I am grateful for this talent that has brought me so much joy.

In January I went to St. Petersburg Florida after having won the 2019 American Stage Theatre New Play Festival competition with my latest two act play The Diary of Annie Mae Franklin.  There were 544 entrants.  The trip included a stipend, three days of hotel accommodations, and a staged reading of my play.  It was awesome!  The play was well received by the standing room only audience and I had so much fun.

In February, I worked on, and finalized, a new cover for the re-release of one of my most successful romance suspense novels, Singing a Song. I've been re-editing that novel for weeks.  Look for the re-release of that novel soon.

Then this month, I traveled to Detroit, Michigan, with my writing partner, Lillie Barnett Evans.  She and I write the hilarious Grandmothers, Incorporated cozy mystery series together.  Go to our website:  www.grandmothersinc.com to find out more about that. The book covers are featured below.  Years ago, we wrote a play with the same title that placed the characters from our book series on stage.  In 2010 the play appeared Off Broadway to full houses and enjoyed an extension.  We've been marketing the play ever since to theatre groups.  In March, The Theatre Arts Club in Detroit produced the play. Lillie and I traveled there to see it.  The ladies in the theatrical group were most gracious and we thoroughly enjoyed the trip.

Yes, the past three months have been busy ones, and I love every minute of it.  Oh, and next month one of my other plays will enjoy a production in the Midwest.  I love the writing life!!!

A NEW BOOK COVER!

Book #3 in the Stillwaters Series

Here it is, the cover to my latest new romantic suspense novel, SOMEONE LIKE THEM, the third and last installment of the Stillwaters Series.  Each of the novels in this series tells the story of one of the three middle aged Carson sisters, each  of whom experiences extraordinary circumstances that completely changes their lives.

The first novel, Someone Like Me, tells Melanie's story.  She's  the middle sister, the "fixer" in the family.   The second novel, Someone Like You, is Jolene's story.  She's the youngest sister, the "tough" one in the family.  SOMEONE LIKE THEM, is about  Wanda,  the oldest sister and the family "protector".  What happens to her in SOMONE LIKE THEM is perhaps the most spectacular story of all!  It's an absolute delight creating this work and when it is released, I hope that readers will enjoy it  as much as I am enjoying writing it. I really like the cover, it conveys the majesty of the woman who Wanda Carson becomes.

Meanwhile, click on the covers and that should take readers to the sites where the other two Stillwaters series novels can be purchased.  Acquaint yourself with the Carson family. I think you'll like them. The plan is for SOMEONE LIKE THEM to be released later this year, after the re-release of several of my former romantic suspense novels, but more about that in future blogs.

A NEW YEAR A NEW HORIZON

The year 2019 came in with a bang!  Not only am I an author, but I also write plays and last year I was one of the winners of the American Stage Theatre 21st Century New Play Festival.  Five hundred forty-four plays were submitted and only four plays were selected for the staged readings.  Those plays were read from  January 3rd to January 6th.  My play, The Diary of Annie Mae Franklin, was read on Saturday, January 5th at the American Stage Theatre in St.  Petersburg, Florida.  It was an absolute pleasure to attend the Festival and to give the following interview for the American Stage Theatre blog:

    21st Century Voices Interview with
     Playwright, Crystal V. Rhodes

As 2018 comes to an end we’re looking forward to kicking off the new year with new plays! Our 21st Century Voices: New Play Festival will run January 3rd-6th featuring five staged readings and talkbacks with playwrights from all over the country. Here’s an interview with Indianapolis based playwright Crystal V. Rhodes whose play THE DIARY OF ANNIE MAE FRANKLIN will be presented on Saturday January 5th at 8pm.

Synopsis of THE DIARY OF ANNIE MAE FRANKLIN

The Franklin family lives in the small town of Jerome, Arkansas, during World War II where the United States government has imprisoned Japanese Americans in “Relocation Camps”. Some of the black residents in Jerome helped build the camp, but the people imprisoned there are completely foreign to them. Yet, the racial injustice that has put them there is all too familiar. When fourteen year old Adam Sato escapes from the “camp” he encounters a twelve year old black girl named Annie Mae Franklin. Without her family’s knowledge, she hides him. When Adam is discovered the family faces a dilemma. Should they hide him and face treason charges or turn him in and be complicit with his immoral imprisonment? While the debate rages, tragedy strikes and it spells disaster for the Franklin household. With their backs against the wall, the family’s solution is escape, as its members—and their unexpected guest—become forced migrants and head North.

What are you most looking forward to about 21st Century Voices?

I am looking forward to hearing the voices of the characters I’ve created come to life under the interpretations of the various actors and the director’s vision.  I’m also looking forward to interacting with other creative artists who attend the Festival.

What inspired you to write this play?

The Diary of Annie Mae Franklin was created as the result of my having read an article about several of the “Japanese Relocation Centers” having been built in the south during WWII.  That little known fact prompted me to conduct research regarding the two camps located in Arkansas. During the course of that research I ran across a short blurb recounting a brief encounter between a young Japanese American boy who had escaped from the relocation center and a young girl standing in front of her house on the side of the road.  The conditions under which she lived were so bad that the boy mistook the girl’s home for an outhouse. The account motivated me to write The Diary of Annie Mae Franklin, a play that would examine the parallels between the social injustice endured by African Americans and by Japanese Americans during World War II.
What has the life of your play been like thus far?

The play was submitted to the 2017 National Black Theatre Festival Readers Theatre and selected to be read at that Festival in August, 2017. Comments from the audience resulted in a few rewrites and the script is now ready for the 21st Century Voices staged reading and further development.
What do you hope to gain from having a director and actors work with your piece?

I hope that by having a director and actors work with The Diary of Annie Mae Franklin that it will help me assess the strengths and weakness of each character.  Staged readings also assist me with finding what I call the holes and gaps in the script. In other words, areas that I might have overlooked when creating the piece.  Hearing the dialogue read aloud by actors in character lets me know how realistic it sounds. I can hear if the dialogue is stilted or preachy and then make a decision as to what improvements are needed.  Play readings are essential to the development of a good play.

What would you like to gain from having an audience hear your play?

I like to see audiences react to the characters and storylines in my plays. How they react lets me know whether they “get it” or whether I have more work to do.  My favorite thing to do when one of my plays goes up as a production is to sit in the audience, anonymously. Sitting there I can feel the energy of the people around me, sense their emotions, evaluate their reactions and hear their comments.  It’s then that I know for sure whether I’ve made them laugh, cry or go to sleep.

What do you want people to take away from your play?

I hope that people will leave The Diary of Annie Mae Franklin with a better understanding of the ravages of racism and poverty, and how they can leave one feeling powerless and vulnerable.  I also want people to remember the history the play conveys. People need to understand that unless we remain vigilant, history can repeat itself, and that’s not always a good thing.
What are your hopes for the future life of your play?

It‘s my hope that The Diary of Annie Mae Franklin will enjoy staged productions in theatres throughout this country and beyond.  I hope that the play will not only entertain audiences, but educate them about a period of time in our history that should not be forgotten. The Diary of Annie Mae Franklin is the first in a trilogy of plays that I plan on writing that will follow the characters in this story. My next two plays will be a One Act that tracks the treacherous journey of the characters in this play who flee southern oppression and then a final Two Act play will take place in Harlem where they will face new challenges.  That being the case, I’m ready for an agent who can help carry this work as far as it can go. So I’m putting that out there!

Do you have any advice for aspiring playwrights?

The best advice I can give to any writer is the simplest advice– keep writing.  Learn as much as you can about the writing process and about the business of writing, and be as versatile as possible.  I’ve written well over twenty-one plays that has led to me to writing theatre and movie reviews, an entertainment column and  producing a radio show, writing voice over scripts for museum exhibits and being the author of fourteen published novels. Aspiring playwrights might want to keep their options open.  Doing so can enhance their creativity. Plus, it can be a whole lot of fun!

THE END OF A GOOD YEAR

I did it!  I completed twelve months of blog posts.  I’ve been remiss in the past, but I was determined that 2018 would be different.  Of course this year seems to have flown by so quickly that I really didn’t notice that  it was nearly over until recently.

It’s been a good year.  The rights to all of my novels published by Genesis Press were returned to me.  I now have complete control over everything I’ve written, both novels and plays.  Believe me, creative control is a powerful feeling.

The second book in the Stillwaters series was released in October. Now Jolene Carson’s story is out there with that of her older sister, Melanie.  I’m gearing up to write the story of the oldest of the three sisters, Wanda.  The title of the book is Someone Like Them.  It’s going to be full of twist, turns and surprises.

A little over a year ago, I wrote a Two Act play titled, The Diary of Annie Mae Franklin, a family drama set during World War II.   It recently won the 2018 American Stage Theatre’s 21st Century Voices New Play Festival.  The work will get a staged reading and perhaps the opportunity for a regional production.

Meanwhile, my writing partner for the Grandmothers, Incorporated cozy book series, L. Barnett Evans and I are in negotiations with a theatre group in Detroit, for the production of our Two Act play, Grandmothers, Incorporated, based on the characters in our books.  Next year our play might be making it’s Midwest debut .  It looks like 2019 will be a good year too!

RE-RELEASES are COMING!

It’s a powerful feeling to be in total control of your dream.  I’ve written over a dozen books, and the rights to all of those titles now belong to me.  Several were in the hands of a former publisher until recently. The rights have now been relinquished to me.

Singing a Song…, Small Sensations and Stillwaters are the names of those titles and will all be re-released.  I can’t say when.  I'll simply say ASAP.  Each of the books will require a new cover and will be re-edited, but the exciting storylines will remain the same, if not enhanced.

Singing a Song…, is part of my romantic suspense Sin Series.  Small Sensations is a stand alone, although some familiar names do appear in the story.  Stillwaters… is also part of the Sin Series, but it carries the name of my latest book series, a trilogy about the lives of three sisters.

Here is a Blurb for each of the books:

Singing a Song

Diva, DARNELL CAMERON and playboy, THAD STEWART, are both superstars.  One would think that they have a lot in common, but in reality they are like oil and water.  These are two American idols who openly despise each other.  It would take a miracle to get these two together, or perhaps a mysterious stranger intent on killing one of them.

Small Sensations

DAVIA MAXWELL is a street-smart thirty-four year old grandmother who has clawed her way out of one of Chicago's roughest ghettoes.  JUSTIN MILES is successful businessman who happens to be a member of one of the most prominent families in Atlanta.  Yet, when Justin meets Davia there is nothing that can keep them apartor so it seems.

Stillwaters…

BEV CAMERON is smart, sexy, sophisticated and the mother of singing superstar Darnell Cameron.  She is a woman in control.  Hollywood agent, RAY WILSON is a mover and shaker in Tinsel town.  What he wants he knows how to get, except when it comes to Bev Cameron.

Singing a Song… will be the first of the three novels re-released, hopefully, early next year.  Meanwhile, I’m developing the outline for the third book in the Stillwaters Series, Someone Like Them.  The life of a writer can be busy, but I’m having the time of my life!

SOMEONE LIKE YOU is Finally Here!

Okay, I've been teasing about SOMEONE LIKE YOU,  Book #2 in the STILLWATERS SERIES for so long that I forgot when I started writing about it, but finally my latest book has been released.  Below is a description of the storyline.

JOLENE CARSON is at the lowest point in her life.  Unemployed and homeless, she is unable to see a brighter future, until her son presents her with an opportunity that changes everything.  Unfortunately, it means having to deal with her son’s boss who turns out to be the most disagreeable man that Jolene has ever met.  How in the world is she supposed to deal with someone like him?

SOLO REEDUS is content with his life.  Why wouldn’t he be?  He’s smart, healthy, wealthy and good looking.  Solo has everything a man could want.  The last thing he needs is an obnoxious woman with too much attitude invading his well ordered life.  How is he supposed to deal with someone like her?

It takes unexpected circumstances for Jolene to realize her self-worth.  In the process, Solo learns to appreciate the strength and courage of an ordinary woman who turns out to be extraordinary.

In writing the story of Jolene Carson, the youngest of the three Carson sisters in the Stillwaters Triology, I began to recognize  strengths in this character  of which even I wasn't aware that she possessed.  The more she developed in my mind, the more I came to admire her.  Believe me, it's true when a writer tells readers that the characters in the books we write take on a life of their own.  My plan was for Jolene to be the tough one in the family, but she turned out to be that and so much more.  So I invite readers to click the cover of SOMEONE LIKE YOU.  It should take it you to amazon.com where you can  purchase the ebook or the paperback.  Enjoy!

SPEAD THE GOOD NEWS!!!

Okay, so I created a great promotion video for my novel, SINFUL INTENTIONS, but I haven't been able to load it on this blog. Maybe that will happen someday when I become  more tech savvy.  I can only wish.  Any of my readers who follow the Grandmothers, Incorporated cozy mystery series that I write with my writing partner, L. Barnett Evans, can go to You Tube and type in Grandmothers Incorporated Adventures.  All of our book promotion videos are there including the one for our  last novel, the very funny WHOSE KNIFE IS IT ANYWAY.  I plan on putting the Sin Series videos on You tube in the near future, and eventually the Stillwaters Series videos as well.  That's long overdue.

I received good news recently regarding my three novels published by Genesis Press.   Those titles are Singing a Song..., Small Sensations and Stillwaters…  The rights for all three novels have reverted back to me!  I have complete control over everything I have written now and I can't say loud enough how great that feels.

Spread the good news.   Over the next year or so I will be releasing each of these three novels with new covers and any updates I choose to make in them, because I CAN!  Hallelujah!  Amen!  Thank you Lord!!!  Life is beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!

SOMEONE LIKE YOU PUBLISHING DELAY & SMASHWORDS BOOK SALE

I've been working on getting the word out about the release of the latest edition of SINFUL INTENTIONS. and while that has been going well, there will be a delay in releasing  SOMEONE LIKE YOU, the latest novel in the Stillwaters Series.  Don't worry though, the book still should be out this year.  At least that's the plan.

One again here's a copy of the SOMEONE LIKE YOU cover that I debuted in April.  I really like it because it conveys the beauty and the complexities of Jolene, the youngest of the three Carson sisters, each of whom learns to turn life's lemons into lemonade.

Meanwhile, SINFUL INTENTIONS is available exclusively on Amazon.com until further notice.  It seems that I get more purchases  on Amazon for my romantic suspense novels than on Smashwords.com, perhaps because more people know about Amazon than Smashwords, but I'm not giving up on Smashwords.  All of my other books are still available on that site, and eventually Sinful Intentions will be back on the site as well.  I do hope that readers will give the smaller site a try.  There are a lot of good Ebooks on Smashwords, including mine, and it does allow for more Ebook readers than just Kindle.

Three of the four novels in the Grandmothers Incorporated cozy mystery series that I co-write with author/playwright, L. Barnett Evans, will be ON SALE for only .99 cents on Smashwords.com through December 2018.  If you haven't read one of our hilarious cozies here's your chance!  Who knows when you'll get another bargain like this!  Our last novel, Whose Knife is it Anyway, is still at the regular price.  After all we can't give away everything!!  Go below past the Blog Post to the four (4) Grandmothers Incorporated book covers click the covers.  Read the excerpts free, then purchase the books and save a bundle!
