TO BE OR NOT TO BE RELEASED IN MAY!

Okay, here I am again, wavering on when my next novel, Someone Like Them, will be released.  I'm on the last editing of the book to make sure that I release the best quality product possible.  My efforts in getting the book out have been interupted by my other writing passion, playwriting.  Over this pass year I've won quite a few playwriting contest.  My work has been selected as finalist or semi-finalist  in even more contest, and I've been deeply involved in the future production of yet another one of my plays.  All of this has taken time away from the promotion of the release of Someone Like Them, and when you 're in this business promotion is a must!

Then, lo and behold, the chance of a lifetime has popped up with my latest play contest win.  I won the right to control the full production of my work and will be provided the budget to do so.  What was already limited time will now become even more limited time to promote my book, not that I'm complaining.  My love for what I do and my gratitude for the writing talent that God has bestowed on me is endless.  Meanwhile, I'm still not sure whether I'll delay the release of Someone Like Them until June.  Actually, one more month is no big deal.  We'll see.

Whatever the case, below is the Prologue to Someone Like Them.  Enjoy!

PROLOGUE

Wanda stood bathed in the glare of the brilliant spotlight with tears streaming down her face.  The audience was singing a love song, just for her.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot…

How could it ever be?

And never brought to mind?

Not brought to mind?  That was impossible.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot…

This was the end.

And auld lang syne?

This was her last performance.

For auld lang syne, my friend…

The most important people in her life were beyond those lights.  Her mother, Faith, her younger sisters Melanie and Jolene, her granddaughters, Raven and Racine…

For auld lang syne,

And her beloved godmother, Miss Emma.

We’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet,

Yes, everyone she loved was present, except the ones she loved beyond comprehension—her children.

For auld lang syne.

The song filling the Broadway theatre morphed into a chant in celebration of Wanda Carson’s extraordinary rise to stardom.

Lady C!  Lady C! Lady C!

Standing center stage, a vision in gold, bathed in the spotlight, Wanda accepted the adulation and deafening applause.  Torrents of tears smeared her glittering makeup.  No one would have guessed that they weren’t tears of joy.

For the past eighteen months, she stood on this stage, singing her heart out.  Every song that she sang was for her children.  Every tear that she shed, past and present, onstage and off, was for the three of them.

The curtain came down.  The spotlight faded.  The last performance was over.  Or was it just beginning?

COMING IN MAY, 2021 -SOMEONE LIKE THEM

Here is the cover for the book that it seems as though I've been working on forever.  SOMEONE LIKE THEM is the last book in the Stillwaters Series.  Each of the books in this series follows the lives of three sisters caught in life circumstances that appear difficult to overcome, but they manage to perserve.  This last story belongs to the oldest of the sisters, Wanda Carson, who succeeds beyond any expectations that she may have had in life.  Yet, she finds that despite wealth and fame, life can still throw curve balls.  Below is the blurb for SOMEONE LIKE THEM.

Lady C is a superstar!  The Grammy winning diva is the toast of Broadway, and will soon grace the silver screen.  She is on her way to becoming an entertainment legend, but in the real world she is WANDA CARSON, single, mother of three, and the legal guardian of her two grandchildren by her wayward daughter.  Having been poverty-stricken most of her life, Wanda has overcome many obstacles.  Yet, wealth and fame doesn’t mean that she has it all.  Not only is she estranged from her daughter, whose whereabouts is unknown, Wanda’s life is threatened by a dangerous man.

Plagued by fears and filled with insecurities, Wanda goes into hiding, where the last thing she expected was to meet a man.  A victim of abuse in past relationships, DONALD CHAPMAN turns out to a complete surprise.  A giant of a man, he is kind, thoughtful and intelligent.  The friendship she forms with him changes her perspective in life.  Yet, just as unexpectedly another man enters the picture with a plan that could disrupt Wanda’s entire world.

BACK AGAIN and HOPEFULLY BETTER THAN EVER

I missed  the January 2021 post because I wasn't sure I wanted to continue this blog.  I've been so busy writing during the pandemic that the extra time it takes to attend to this blog hasn't always been there,  but then I thought, what the hell.  Some of my readers actually look at my blog.  So, I'll see if I can maintain it another year.

In 2020, I've been blogging about writing my latest Stillwaters series book, Someone Like Them.  I finished the book, and then sent it to the best editor I've had in a long time for her review.  To make a long story short, I have some work to do on Someone Like Them because I don't want to make the mistakes I've made in the past--and believe there have been many.

In sending my two former Stillwaters series books, Someone Like Me and Someone Like You to the new editor, she found mistakes that had been overlooked in both those books, and I was truly embarassed that those books were released with too many errors.  There is nothing I can do but take full responsibility, go back, fix those mistakes and release the books again on Amazon.com and Smashwords.com.  I am in the process of doing that now.   So, those of you who may have read these two books that had such blatant errors, I apologize.

I take pride in being a good writer, and I should have been paying more attention.  I'll do my best not to let that happen again.

THE END OF THE ROAD

I've been writing this blog since 2012, and I think I've come to the end of the road on this site.  How I've managed to keep up amazes me,  especially in 2020.  This is the year that the pandemic seems to have put me on what I call creative crack.  My creativity has soared.  I finished  Someone Like Them a romantic suspense novel, (or is it Women's Fiction , I'm not sure anymore.)   I finished writing a mystery novel with my writing partner, L. Barnett Evans.  I also started two new novels.  One is a historical mystery and the other one is general fiction with political and social overtones.  Plus, earlier this year I wrote a play titled Ebony Eagles, the third work in a trilogy of plays I started in 2017.  All three plays have won or been finalists in  national play festivals.  I wrote Ebony Eagles in March 2020 and the play has been a finalist in two festivals and has won a third. I couldn't be happier with those results.  It has been quite a year.  However, I think it's time to find a new name for this blog, a new direction since I'm expanding my writing muscles, and probably a new blog platform.

In 2021 Someone Like Them should be released, and if we can find an agent, hopefully, the thriller Retribution, written by L. Barnett  Evans and me, should be released by 2022.  In addition, I was the recipient of a prestigious award from my local Arts Council to indulge in a creative endeavor that will keep me on the road for a while.  So, I'm not sure if I'm going to keep up this blog or start a new one.  I have yet to decide.  Meanwhile I do have a website which I would like readers to visit:  www.crystalrhodes.com.

I want to wish everyone a Happy New Year.  s we all know, the year 2020 has been one for the ages.

A REWARDING MONTH FOR WRITING

I've been very busy this month and nearly missed writing this month's blog.  I had my playwright hat on and was privileged to be one of the winners of the Ivoryton Playhouse Theatre's Women Playwrights Initiative for 2020.  My One Act drama, 1200 MILES FROM JEROME, was given a  staged reading at the Ivoryton Playhouse, located in Connecticut, and it was quite a success.

The play is set in 1942 during WW II.  It is about a courageous teacher and members of an African American family who are transporting a young Japanese American boy who has escaped from an interment camp in Jerome, Arkansas to New York City where he can be shielded by relatives.  Danger is lurking for the car's occupants every miles it will take to get there, and along the way a lot of truth is revealed.

Below is the link to the TV interview I gave while in Connecticut on a program titled "A CERTAIN AGE", with  host Li Hayes.  The interview was broadcast in Connecticut only, but it will tell you a lot about my career as a writer:

Also, here are some photos from the powerful play reading that was held at the Ivoryton Playhouse Theatre in Ivoryton, Connecticut. Everyone involved in putting on the Women Playwrights Initiative for 2020 did a wonderful job!

HELLO 2020!!

Here we are in the first year of a new decade, and I welcome it with open arms!  Last year was so fantastic for me creatively that I'm giddy with excitement to see what 2020 will bring.  My goal to finish the first draft of Someone Like Them by the end of 2019 was achieved.  I finished the final draft on December 31st, New Years Eve.  While other people were partying fervently, I was writing feverishly.  Such is the life of a writer.  It's not all wine and roses.

I look forward to going through Someone Like Them again, to fine tune it.  I like my character,  Wanda Carson.  She is a 50 year old grandmother who she is living a dream that can only be imagined by others.  Unfortunately, she discovers that all that glitters is not gold.

Someone Like Them should be released by this fall, if not sooner.  Meanwhile, I'm also working on a new Two Act play.  My latest One Act Play, 1200 Miles from Jerome, which won the 2020 Women Playwrights Initiative, sponsored by the Ivoryton Playhouse in Connecticut, will enjoy a staged reading early this year.  I'm also writing another mystery novel with L. Barnett Evans, my talented co-author of the Grandmothers, Incorporated cozy mystery series.  It looks like 2020 will be as creatively satisfying as 2019.  I sure hope so.  Meanwhile, Happy New Year!

2019 - THE YEAR OF ALL YEARS!

I can't account for other people, but I am one who is grateful for every year of my life, and the majority of them have been good ones.  Fortunately, I pursued my passion for writing, never limiting myself, and I have been richly rewarded. I've done it all, books, plays, TV scripts, articles.  You name it, I've tried it.  As we come to the end of 2019, I look back and recognize that this year has been one of the most creatively rewarding that I've ever had.  Financial rewards are always welcomed, but when one is an artist and receives recognition for ones art that's a feeling that is difficult to describe.  The word elation is the only one I can think of at the moment.

The year 2019 opened with my Two Act play, The Diary of Annie Mae Franklin, winning a national playwriting contest, The American Theatre's 21st Century Voices New Play Festival.  I spent a weekend in January in St. Petersburg, Florida where a staged reading of the play was presented, and it received an excellent reception.  The next few months saw the re-release of one my romantic suspense novels, Singing a Song, and the writing of the third book in my Stillwaters Series, Someone Like Them (which it seems like I've been working on forever).  I acquired a drama agent in the fall, presenting me with the opportunity to have my plays presented in more theatres, and a shot at having my work acquired for TV--one of my major goals.

I attended severalwriting workshops.  My writing partner and I won scholarships to attend an artist conference.  We gave presentations on writing to two college classes, and a visit with one my favorite book clubs was quite a treat. To top it off at the end of this year I won a second national playwriting contest! My One Act Play, 1200 Miles from Jerome, won the 2020 Women Playwrights Initiative, sponsored by the Ivoryton Playhouse in Connecticut.  I'm looking forward to that staged reading.

Recently, the year was further topped off with my having been presented with a Creative Arts Fellowship by the Indiana Arts Council.  What an honor it is to be recognized and appreciated for my art.  With this fellowship I can travel to anywhere in the world I want.  I'm still tingling from the excitement.

Yes, 2019 was quite a year!  I can't wait until 2020.

STILLWATERS COMING

It looks like I’m going to finish editing the re-release of my novel, Stillwaters, before I finish my novel Someone Like Them. Actually, that makes sense, especially since Someone Like Them, is the third installment of what I call the Stillwaters book series.  For readers who are unfamiliar with the town of Stillwaters and some of the people in it, the re-release of the Stillwaters novel will introduce readers to the town. It’s an extraordinary place, and the characters that I create who live in and around the town find benefit from the association.  In the Stillwaters novel, not only is the reader introduced to the town and its residents, but you get to meet Bev Cameron and Ray Wilson, two people who don’t look as though they have much in common, but looks can deceive.  Here’s an excerpt from the first chapter of Stillwaters.

CHAPTER 1

“What do you mean, Ray is coming here?”  Bev Cameron gripped the telephone tightly, uncertain that she heard her daughter correctly.  Everyone in their family knew the strict criteria that must be followed in order to bring a stranger to her hometown, and Ray Wilson, the man who had been shamelessly flirting with her for years, did not fit the criteria. “There must be some mistake. Who told you this?”

     “Thad.”

Bev knew that there was no doubt about the validity of the information.  Her daughter’s husband was movie star Thad Stewart and he adored his wife, singing superstar Darnell Cameron.  She was the love of his life, his confidante and his best friend.  Thad wouldn’t lie to her.

Darnell explained.  “Thad was excited about playing golf on the new course, and he said that he couldn’t wait for Ray to get here so they could play together.  Then, he thought about what he had said he clammed up, but it was too late by then.  It’s my guess that Ray’s coming with Dana.”

     Bev was shocked.  “My sister?”

“Who else could it be?  Aunt Dana said that she was coming home and the two of them are friends.”

“That’s true, and it does make sense.” Bev could tell by Darnell’s tone that she was also finding it difficult to believe the scenario.

“What should we do?” the younger woman asked.  “Tell the Family Council and have them stopped at the gate?”

“I’m not sure.”  Bev considered the alternatives.  “I’m just wondering why she’s bringing him here, and how she expects to get him into town.”

“There’s only one way that she can get him in,” Darnell affirmed, “and that’s with a lie.”

Bev knew that she was right.  “Why would she do this?” Her heart sank at the idea of her younger sister engaging in such deception.

“Maybe it’s some move to stop Aunt Tessa’s family from taking over the town.”  Even through the telephone Darnell could feel her mother’s pain.  The two sisters had been estranged for quite some time and Dana’s return home might have provided an opportunity for their reconciliation, if it wasn’t for this new development. Darnell could hardly comprehend what her aunt must feel about their family to do something like this.

“You might be right,” Bev’s voice was hollow. “She’s probably plotting some kind of legal maneuver that could wreck havoc in the family.” She gave a shuttering sigh.

“So what’s the plan, Mama?”  Darnell’s voice was filled with sadness.

Bev tried to think. “We’ll keep this to ourselves for now.  If she gets past the gate with Ray, let’s see what Dana is up to.”

Darnell was receptive.  “That sounds reasonable.  Meanwhile, I’m going to see if I can pump some more information out of Thad.  Kiss my little gem for me.”

The women disconnected and Bev sat reflecting on their conversation. What was Dana up to?  What part did Ray Wilson play in her sister’s scheme?  She was familiar with her younger sister’s escapades, but why had she aligned herself with that middle-aged playboy and dared breach the security of their family haven?

A loud yawn interrupted Bev’s musing and she looked down into the face of the little brown bundle nestled in her arms and smiled.  Her granddaughter, six-month-old Nia Cameron-Stewart, was awake.

“Hey there, little one.”  Gently, Bev caressed the baby’s soft cheek and was rewarded with a toothless grin.  The dimples inherited from her father winked at her and Bev melted.  This had to be the most beautiful baby in the world.

“Let’s get you something to eat.”  She rose and headed toward the kitchen with Nia.  “Then we’re going to wait for your Aunt Dana and your godfather Ray to arrive.  When they do, there’s going to be some fireworks lighting up this town, and it’s not even close to being Independence Day.”

SINGING A SONG is in Paperback

As stated in the last blog, the paper back version of Singing a Song is now available on Amazon.com.  As long as I continue to write and my books are published my work will not only be in eBook format, but in paperback as well.  Who knows, one day I may even have a book published in hard cover.

I'm not sure how many people read books other than in eBook format anymore, but I know that I enjoy a good paperback.  They bring back memories of my childhood when I used to curl up in bed at night, or on the couch, and sometimes even lay under the shade of a tree, being entertained for hours.  Books have always taken me into a world of imagination where I could become the heroine, or hero, capable of doing anything.  It is because of books that I became a writer, but it wasn't simply the words on the pages that I enjoy.  I like the feel of books in my hand, the enjoy turning the pages of a book in anticipation of what's coming next.  I even enjoy sticking bookmarks between the pages of a books.  I don't know why.  It's probably some kind of psychological satisfaction that I get from the experience, but I do know why I get upset if the bookmark falls out and I loose my place.  It sucks!

In my opinion, an e-reader simply can't replace a real book.  But, I'm glad that eBooks and eReaders were invented.  They make my work available to so many more readers.  Plus, I don't have to pack ebooks around to book fairs trying to making sales.  That's a real plus.

STILL WORKING HARD

Things have been moving so swiftly over the last few weeks I almost forgot about the blog.  In the course of the last few weeks,  I've been working hard on my next novel, Someone Like Them, and  editing and updating my novel, Stillwaters, for re-release.   The latter is the novel that introduces readers to an amazing town and equally amazing characters, and this book is connected to the  storylines about the three sisters in the Stillwaters book series.  So, I'd like to get the Stillwaters book out before I release Someone Like Them.

Meanwhile, the paperback version of Singing a Song will be available on Amazon.com before the end of this month.  While all of that is happening, I'm still working on a novel with my writing partner, L. Barnett Evans, a thriller this time, and in the process I went in search of an agent to help me introduce my plays to more theatres.  I more or less gave up on finding a literary agent, but miracle of miracles, I got the attention of a theatrical agent right away.  So that goal is attained.  Now, all I have to do is finish the first draft of Someone Like Them and eventually get it out there.  Keep your fingers crossed.  But at least I have the cover.  Here it is again.

MY NEXT NOVEL - SOMEONE LIKE THEM

Thanks to everyone who responded to the half price sale of my books on Smashwords during the month of July.  It went well.  Over the next few months (maybe years), I hope to re-release several of my previous novels from the Sin series.

I'm presently working on the last book in the Stillwater series.  The title of the book is Someone Like Them and I hope to finish the first draft of the story by the end of this year.

In the Stilllwaters series, each one of the three sisters that I follow in the storylines finds the strength in themselves to overcome their life circumstances.   Wanda Carson is the oldest of the three sisters in this series, and to say that her life goes from rags to riches is any understatement.   Here's a preview of the book's opening.

SOMEONE LIKE THEM

PROLOGUE

Wanda stood bathed in the glare of the brilliant spotlight with tears streaming down her face.  What was being sung was a love song, just for her.
Should auld acquaintance be forgot

How could it ever be?

And never brought to mind?

Not brought to mind?  That was impossible.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot

This was the end.

And auld lang syne?

This was her last performance.

For auld lang syne, my friend…

The most important people in her life were out there beyond the lights.  Her mother, Faith, her younger sisters Melanie and Jolene, her granddaughters, Raven and Racine…

For auld lang syne,

And of course, her beloved godmother Miss Emma.

Yes, everyone she loved was present, except the ones she loved beyond comprehensionArmand, Davon and Christa her children.

For auld lang syne.

As the audience at the Broadway theatre finished the song for the woman who they felt was just like them, the chant that followed Wanda Carson’s extraordinary rise to stardom began, reaching a crescendo.

Lady C!  Lady C! Lady C!

She stood center stage, a vision in gold, bathed in the spotlight, amid a shower of flowers, chants of adulation and deafening applause.  The curtain came down slowly.  Torrents of tears washed her glittering makeup away.  No one would have guessed that they weren’t tears of joy.

For the past eighteen months, she stood on this stage, eight times a week, singing her heart out.  Every song that she sang was for her children.  Every tear that she shed, in the past and in the present, onstage and off, was for the three of them.

The curtain came down.  The spotlight faded.  The last performance was over.  Or was it just beginning?

Traveling + Writing = Interesting Storyline

Oh, oh,  I missed my May blog, but I  do have an excuse.  Last month I traveled out of the country to Cuba.  What an exciting adventure I had.  The trip was for both business as well as pleasure.  I plan on using some of the locales in Cuba as the backdrop for a future novel.

Right now I'm busy writing the second novel in my Stillwaters Trilogy and I'm using a trip I took to London, England last year as a backdrop for Jolene Carson's storyline.  For those of you who haven't read Someone Like Me, the first book in my series ,  Jolene is the youngest of the three Carson sisters that were introduced in Someone Like Me, and Jolene's quite a character.  I'm having a lot of fun pitting this mouthy fish-out-of-water against the stiff upper lip British.  Having Jolene walk the same streets that I walked in London really brings the story to life.  Meanwhile, there's a really good Four Star Review about Someone Like Me on Amazon.com.  I've taken the liberty of posting it below.

Top Customer Reviews - 4.0 out of 5 stars  HOPE REALIZED!  Very Well Written By Amazon Customer

FORMAT KINDLE EDITION

This is an excellent writer. I loved how she weaved the characters, this was a very good example of character development.  The Heroine was quite something and enjoyed watching her climb the ladder of hope all by herself.  This was a wonderful story of perseverance, faith, the strength of a woman and most of all HOPE!  Very well done Ms. Rhodes, keep them coming.

I certainly will do that and I'm grateful for the review.  Click the Someone Like Me cover and it will take you to Amazon.com

A BRIEF SAMPLE OF SOMEONE LIKE ME

Okay, I managed to do my first posting for 2017 the last day in January!  My goal to update my blog on a regular basis is still intact.  The RELEASE DATE for the first book in my new STILLWATERS SERIES, titled SOMEONE LIKE ME, will be sometime in March, 2017.

The series follows the lives of three sisters, ordinary women who experience extraordinary events that changes their lives.  Here's a sample:

PROLOGUE

Tears trickled down Melanie Taylor’s cheeks as she recalled the judge’s declaration.

“Frank Taylor, Jr., I hereby sentence you to 15 years in the state penitentiary.”

That meant that her oldest child would be thirty-five years old if he served the time without parole.

“What was Frankie thinking when he robbed that store?”  Her question wasn’t directed to anyone in the car in particular, but her mother thought that she might have the answer.

“It was them drugs that caused that boy to do that,” Faith Carson declared.

That truth only sharpened the pain that already shrouded Melanie in misery.  Her child was a crack addict.  He had been high when he committed the crime.  Her older sister, Wanda, didn’t make her feel any better.

“That boy’s just like his Daddy.  He never did listen to a thing nobody had to tell him.  Look where that got him.”

Melanie rolled her eyes at her.  She suspected that the only reason Wanda had volunteered to drive her home from the courthouse was to gloat over Melanie’s failure as a mother.  Of course, Wanda couldn’t be voted Mother of the Year.  Her two sons were in and out of jail constantly and her daughter was on drugs.  Melanie’s younger sister, Jolene, hadn’t fared much better as a parent either with her three boys.  She hadn’t even raised them.

Just like their mother, each of the sisters had been teenage mothers. Between the three of them they had a total of ten children with Melanie being the only one who had married the father of her children.  But that decision turned out to be a disaster.

Giving a plaintive sigh, Melanie looked out the window at the passing scenery, seeing nothing.  This was not the life that she wanted for herself and her children.  How had things gone so wrong?

She couldn’t remember when she wasn’t struggling financially.  For most of her life, public assistance had been her main source of income, supplemented now and then by minimum wage jobs that kept her living from hand to mouth.  Her childhood dreams and ambitions had faded long ago.

Following in the footsteps of the other women in their family, Melanie’s oldest daughter, Layla, had two kids by the age of seventeen.  Her younger son, Paul, was a high school dropout and spent his days hanging out on the streets.  Melanie feared what would happen to her youngest child, Myra.

“Will we ever see Frankie again?”  The nine year old asked, looking up at her mother with fear filled eyes.

Melanie tried to muster a smile.  “Yes, we will.  We’ll go visit him whenever we can.”

She knew that she sounded more confident than she felt.  The prison where her son would be sent was hundreds of miles away.  Getting there wouldn’t be easy.  Her old car was always in the shop, and money for the round trip bus ticket wasn’t readily available.

Lord, she was tired of this day to day fight for survival.  She was weary of sacrificing her children to despair.  Things had to change, if not for her then for the child sitting beside her.

Myra was her only hope that one of her children might make it out of the cycle of poverty that had weighed her family down for so long.  Her baby girl was smart.  She was a straight A student, and according to her teachers, she had a bright future.  Yet, what chance did she have with a mother who hadn’t even graduated from high school?

At that moment Melanie Taylor made a life altering decision.  She swore to herself and on the life of her youngest child that a change was going to be made.

SHADOWS OF LOVE IS OUT AT LAST!!

After more delays than I care to admit, my latest romance suspense novel, SHADOWS OF LOVE is finally available in paperback and Ebook format on Amazon.com.  Click the  SHADOWS OF LOVE book cover  and it will take you straight to the site.

I've had to ask myself why did it take so long to release SHADOWS OF LOVE.  To be honest, I finished the book in 2015.  I gave my self numerous excuses as to why I had to delay the book's debut, but one I wouldn't admit to myself, until recently, was that I had mixed feelings about one of the characters in the book.  As an author, I created a protagonist (or maybe he's an antagonist) who has indulged in a lot of unsavory mess in his life.  He even lives a lie up to the moment that his secret is uncovered.  But, for some reason I found myself drawn to this character. I didn't want to  him like him, but I did, so I hesitated putting him out into the world.  My characters, Nedra and Sinclair, find themselves faced with  the same dilemma as the story progresses.  Read SHADOWS OF LOVE and see what you think of the mysterious Mr. H.

SHADOWS OF LOVE

PROLOGUE

Entering the front door, the woman walked into the house with the confidence of someone who knew its interior well.  She had worked for the owner since he moved here years ago.  She was his cook and housekeeper and it was a job that she enjoyed.

Her employer was a nice man.  He wasn’t demanding and he paid well.  She didn’t work on weekends, so she usually prepared his meals for those days ahead of time.  When she came back to work on Monday, she had no idea that it wouldn’t be another normal day, until she found her employer in bed unconscious.

That was three days ago.  Since his hospitalization, his condition had gone from bad to worse.  The doctor informed her this morning that the situation was grave.  He might not recover.  They asked about his next of kin.

She could provide them with nothing.  All she knew about the man for whom she worked was his name and that he was an American.

After the grim diagnosis, she returned to his house and went into the bedroom that had been converted to an office.  She reasoned that it couldn’t be illegal to break into his locked desk drawer since this was an emergency.  Secretly, she had always wondered what he kept in there.

Getting into the drawer wasn’t easy.  She used every tool she could think of, but nothing worked.  Frustrated, she decided to search the rest of the house and return to the drawer later.  She didn’t expect to find anything, but much to her surprise, buried deep in the back of his bedroom closet, behind his well appointed suits and ties, she found a metal safe deposit box burrowed inside a suitcase.  There was a key taped underneath the box.  It fit the lock and when it was opened she hoped what was inside would offer clues to the mystery of who he was.

CHAPTER 1

 “I can’t believe this!”

Nedra Davis-Reasoner banged on the steering wheel of her luxury vehicle in frustration.  This could not be happening!

Refusing to believe the obvious, she turned the key in the ignition and pressed down on the accelerator one more time.  Nothing.   No sound at all.

Looking down at the Burberry trench coat she was wearing, she sighed in resignation.  This could prove embarrassing.

Weighing her options, she considered which one would be best.  Should she call her husband, Sinclair, at his office or the auto club for a tow to a garage?  Sinclair was closer to her.

She was just about to push speed dial when there was a knock on her driver side window.   Startled, Nedra jerked around to see a man peering at her.

“Hey!  You need some help?”

Nedra nodded.  “Yes, I think I do.”

 ****

Sinclair Reasoner was feeling great.  In a few hours he and Nedra would be on the road to Sausalito where he would spend the upcoming week overdosing on golf.  His best friend, newspaper mogul, Brandon Plaine, introduced him to the sport years ago.  Since then he had been hooked.

Brandon was vacationing with his family at their home in Hawaii, but Sin would still have plenty of playmates.  There was Ray Wilson who was married to Bev Cameron, the mother of Sin’s half sister.  The Wilsons lived on a houseboat in Sausalito and Ray knew every course in Marin County.  Almost as knowledgeable was their other golfing buddy, James Starr.  He and his wife, Dana, lived in Tiburon, not far from Ray and his wife.  Dana was Bev’s younger sister.  The two women were Nedra’s cousins.

This week was about spending time with family, which was something he always enjoyed.  Orphaned as a child, he had grown up on the streets of New York City alone, longing for such a bond.  Now, he cherished everything about being a part of such a close-knit group.

There was a knock on his office door and his administrative assistant entered.

“This just came for you, special delivery.”  She handed him a single envelope, and placed the rest of the mail in his inbox.  “And your wife is on line one.  She tried to reach you on your cell phone, but it went to voice mail.”

“Okay, thanks.”  Reaching for the receiver Sin threw a cursory glance at the envelope he had been handed.  It was from outside the United States, but he didn’t recognize the return address.

“I’m going home now,” his assistant told him as she started toward the exit.  “Enjoy your time off.”  The door closed behind her.  Sin pushed the speaker phone button.

“Hey, babe, what’s up?”  Absently, he slit the top of the envelope with a sliver plated opener and started to remove the contents.

“Get in your car right now and come get me!”  She sounded desperate.

Sin froze.  “Are you in trouble?  Where are you?”

She gave him the name of the garage where her car had been towed.  “And hurry!”

Tossing the envelope on the desk, Sin pocketed his cell phone, grabbed his suit jacket and hurried out of his office.  When he arrived at the garage, Nedra was waiting outside.  She snatched the car door open and slid inside as soon as he came to a stop.

“Let’s go!” she ordered.

Throwing her a puzzled glance, he pulled away from the curb. “What did you do, rob the place?”

Covering her face with both hands, Nedra shook her head slowly and sank down in the seat.  “Lord, lord, lord.”

“What happened?  Did they stiff you on the car?”

“Just drive, please.”

Sin did as ordered, wondering what was wrong with his wife.  She sat in the passenger seat holding her coat tightly against her body and looking glum.  When he turned to head back to his office, she nearly jumped out her skin.

“Where are you going?  I thought you were going home!”

“I left my briefcase.  My laptop is in it.  I want to take it with us.   Now what’s wrong with you?”

She ignored his question. “It’s past work hours, is anybody still there?”

“There wasn’t when I left.”  Pulling into his private parking place in front of the Victorian mansion that housed his successful import business, he cut off the ignition and turned to face her.  “Did something happen I should know about?”  His voice deepened. “Did somebody hurt you?”  He looked poised for action if she confirmed the latter.

Understanding his concern, Nedra decided to show him rather than tell him.

“Since nobody is inside, I’ll go with you upstairs.  We’ll talk then.”

When they arrived in his office, Sin closed the door behind them, leaned against it and crossed his arms.  “So talk.”

Tossing her purse on the desk, Nedra turned and let her eyes feast on the male specimen she had married.  The man was downright fine.  Who could resist that chocolate brown skin, those coal black eyes, that sexy cleft in his chin or the solitary gold earring he sported?  Sinclair Reasoner turned the heads of women wherever he went.  The slight sprinkle of gray in his hair and his well groomed moustache made him look distinguished.  And when he flashed that smile of his, it was hard for a woman not to wet her panties.  Sin’s nickname suited him well.

Gazing at his fit, six foot two inch frame, Nedra considered herself a fortunate woman, but, Sin should consider himself fortunate too, and she was about to show him why.

Nedra’s light brown eyes held his dark ones as she slowly unbuttoned her coat.  She opened it with pain-staking care.

Sin’s eyes nearly popped out of his head.  His shapely, five foot ten inch wife was standing in front of him dressed in a lacy black demi- bra, matching bikini panties, black patent leather high heels and nothing else.

“Damn!”  His manhood jerked involuntarily.

Nedra gave an anguished sigh.  “I was on my way here to surprise you, when my car stopped and there I was in the public streets half naked!”  Her voice rose in distress.

As he moved toward her like a man in a trance, Sin was trying to focus on what she was saying, but he was mesmerized by a pair of long nutmeg brown legs that seemed to go on forever.  The curve of her bosom as they molded themselves to that bra had him throbbing.  He broke into a sweat.

Nedra slapped a hand to her forehead.  “What was I thinking?  I’m a minister for goodness sake!  The mother of three children!  I can’t run around town naked…”

I wish.

“…trying to play sex games with my husband!”

Oh yes she could!

Nedra grabbed his lapels.  “All I wanted was for us to have a little playtime before we got on the road.”

Yes!

“You know I’ve never done anything like this before!”

Wish she had.

She laid her head against his chest.  “Some tow truck driver was behind me when the car stopped and helped me.  I was so embarrassed.  I was scared the whole time that somebody might find out I was running around like this.”

Sin snaked his arms around her.  Nedra snuggled against him.  She was so glad that she had him there for comfort.  That was until she heard the rumbling in his chest.

She pulled back and looked up at him.  “Are you laughing?”

Sin shook his head vehemently.  “Noooo!”

The word came out in an unconvincing slur that ended in a definite snigger.  He was trying to keep a straight face, but was unsuccessful.  He broke into laughter.  Nedra pushed him away in disgust.

“I don’t believe it!  You’re laughing at me!”

He was and he couldn’t stop.  Sin laughed and laughed while Nedra fumed.  Leaning against the desk, her eyes were slits as she watched him double over and flop down on the sofa.

“Go ahead.  Enjoy yourself,” she said coolly, flipping her coat farther off her shoulders so that he could have a better view of her well toned body in the sexy lingerie.  She had felt the effect her mini striptease had on him when he was holding her.  “And stay over there while you’re at it.”

Sin sobered quickly.  Wiping tears of mirth from his eyes, he rose and sauntered over to his gorgeous wife.  She put her hand up to stop his progress.

“Oh no you don’t.  Keep your distance since you seem to get so much humor out of this.”

“You’ve got to admit that as sexy as you look, baby, what happened is kind of funny.”  He made an unsuccessful attempt to stifle one last snicker before taking another step toward her.  “The Executive Director of one of the most respected nonprofit organizations in town is running around the Monterey Peninsula naked.”

“Half naked,” Nedra corrected.  “And I was doing it for you, for us.”

Sin took a step closer.  “And it’s appreciated.”

“We’re getting older and I don’t want our sex life to become boring.  I don’t want us to become one of those conventional couples.”

One more step and he was standing right in front of her.  He kissed the tip of her nose.  “When have we ever been conventional?”

“That’s true.”  She and Sinclair Reasoner had met under the most unconventional circumstances and their life together had been a roller coaster ride ever since.  “And I’ve never regretted one moment that we’ve been together.”  A flood of good memories overshadowed her annoyance.   She caressed his cheek.  He placed a kiss in the palm of her hand.

“Neither have I.”  Once again, he wrapped his arm around her waist and pulled her to him.  “So let’s get this party started half naked lady.”

Placing her hand on his chest, she pushed him back.  “Are you sure you’re through laughing at me?”

Sin faked one last snort.  “That’s it.  I’m out of laughs.”

“Are you certain?”

“Feel this and you let me know.”  He rubbed his hardening member against her seductively as the heat of his kisses singed the slender column of her neck.

“Oh, I like that,” Nedra purred.

“Then I’m positive that you’ll love this.”

Meandering lips wandered down the length of her throat, halting at the swell of her breasts rising from their lacey confines.  Taking the flimsy fabric between his teeth, he tugged gently gaining access to one of her pebble hard nipples.  He licked and nipped.  His wife moaned her appreciation.

“Let’s do this, baby,” she breathed hotly against the waves in his hair.

Nedra’s eyes slid to the abandoned sofa, but her husband had other ideas.  With one arm wrapped around her waist, he took his other hand and swept his desk clean.

“Sinclair!”  Nedra shrieked with surprise and delight as her purse and everything else on the desk’s surface scattered onto the floor.

“Unconventional,” he reminded her.  In one swift move, he lifted her up on the desk.

Spreading her legs, he disposed of her panties.  She removed his shirt.  He released her breast from the confines of her bra.  She unbuckled his belt, unzipped his pants and then pulled them and his briefs down his slender hips.  With one manicured fingertip she stroked his engorged penis.

“Looks like you’re ready.”

“Always.”  Sin gave her a kiss that left no doubt about that.  He pulled back.  “To keep it from being boring, let’s play no hands.”

Placing them behind his back, Sin’s mouth and tongue became weapons of mass seduction as Nedra blossomed beneath his blistering assault.  He savored her hardened nubs as though they were exotic fruit.  He suckled.  She convulsed.  His deadly tongue worked relentless magic all the way down to the citadel that guarded her core.  When he entered her, Nedra’s screams of pleasure echoed throughout the vacant building.
